Hamtramck is a small Polish city within the borders of Detroit. In fact, it is surrounded by Detroit on all sides. Hamtramck is a small, quiet town which is almost totally opposite from Detroit. Homes are well kept, alleys are spotless, grass is cut, and the houses are painted regularly. The city is so successful because it is supported by members of its own community. Hamtramck is the home of Kowalski Meats where they make Kowalski Smoked Sauages and Polish Kiebasa. Also every February on Fat Tuesday bakeries in Hamtramck create "Packzi" pronounced 'punch-ski' or 'pooo-nch ski.' These are very sweet jelly filled donuts that people line up early Tuesday morning to buy. Michigan Coalition for Human Rights Detroit Based Freedom Tour Located in Hamtramck is the War Memorial Park and a park dedicated to Pope John Paul II can be found on the same street. He visited the city and gave a pastoral address to the community in 1987. Church tours and shopping trips throughout the area are available. |
